The preparation of -2-(chloromethyl)-1-methyl-1H-imidazole hydrochloride is usually accomplished by reacting 1-methyl-1H-imidazole with methyl chloride. During the reaction, the chlorine atom on the methyl chloride molecule is transferred to 1-methyl -1H-imidazole to form 2-(chloromethyl)-1-methyl -1H-imidazole.
